City Tree Scaler (Climate KIC Scaler Project, 2017)

Proambiente is partner of the City Tree Scaler (Climate KIC) Project, whose target is the abatement of polluting substances and the improvement of air quality in urban areas. The Project provides for a monitoring campaign concerning the effects of the installation of 6 bio-tech panels (the so called CITY TREES) on air quality improvement and GHG reduction.

Such panels are self-sustaining structures (4 x 3 x 0.6 m3) supporting specific musk cultures capable of “decimating” PM10, NO2 and O3, and producing the same benefits (lab test estimation) of 275 trees. The 6 panels will be installed in different “canyon-like” roads (long, narrow and traffic congested) in the urban area of Modena and, according to the developers, these vegetable filters will be able to remove about 240 tons of CO2 from the surrounding atmospheric air.
The bio-tech panels are conceived and developed by the German start-up “Green City Solutions” and the Project achieved the funding by Climate KIC, the most important European public/private community for the promotion of knowledge and innovation towards the reduction of climate change impact and the creation of a “zero-carbon” society.
The municipality of Modena involved in the test by means of the Agency for Energy and Sustainable Development (EASS), member of the Climate KIC.
The first panel will be installed in Viale Verdi, in correspondence of the bus stop close to Via Emilia Est. The technicians of the Environment and Mobility section are performing surveys to identify the different locations (close to the historic Centre) to install the remaining 5 panels.
The test campaign will continue until the end of 2018, and the measurements will be performed by the Researchers of CNR-ISAC (Bologna and Lecce sections), coordinated by Proambiente staff.
